LUNCH WITH THE HISTORY PEOPLE

When: Thursday, August 21, 2008 from noon to 1 PM

What: Dr. Marilyn Chiat, author and historical consultant for the Friends of B'Nai Abraham Synagogue, will detail Bob Dylan's Roots: Jewish Life on the Iron Range.  The following is a summary of her presentation.  “Jewish settlers began to arrive in the Twin Ports and the Iron Range with the opening of the mines in the late 19th century.  Among the first to arrive were Robert Alan Zimmerman's (Bob Dylan’s) grandparents, who were forced to flee their homes in Eastern Europe because of religious persecution.  Settling in the Twin Ports and then on the Range, they, along with other newcomers representing a vast array of ethnic groups, set down roots in the region, establishing homes, businesses and religious institutions.  It was from this multicultural milieu that Bob Dylan emerged.”

Where:  Ruth Maney Room, first floor of the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot), 506 West Michigan Street, Duluth, MN

Antique Appraisal

Identify and value your mystery collectible!

Bring your mystery antique or collectible item to the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (the Depot) for a free appraisal on Wednesday, August 20, 2008! The St. Louis County Historical Society has arranged for Dan Sershon of Northland Estate Services, an expert in antique appraisal, to be at your service from noon until 3 pm in the rotunda next to the Depot Theater.

You may bring one or more items for an informal verbal identification and evaluation. If the piece is too large or fragile to be hand-carried, a clear photograph with a description of any marks and labels will be sufficient.

Participants over the years have thoroughly enjoyed the appraiser’s comments on what is always an interesting assortment of antiques and collectibles.  ARCO coffee is available while you wait.

This session is part of an on-going public education program offered by the St. Louis County Historical Society. Sponsorship does not imply endorsement of this or any other estate/appraisal service, and museum staff is prohibited by professional ethics from making financial appraisals.

Call (218) 733-7568 for further information.
