Dulcimer Day in Duluth 2012
Dulcimer Day in Duluth 2012 will be held once again on the 1st Saturday of May. May 5 will be THE day for dulcimer players to gather to learn, listen and have a great time. Twenty classes are scheduled for beginning mountain dulcimer, intermediate mountain dulcimer, beginner hammered dulcimer, advanced beginner hammered dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, using your body carefully to make music, clogging (traditional dance), tin whistle, and even origami. A team of nine instructors will be teaching. The 3 special dulcimer guests are Sue Carpenter, Lucille Reilly and Dick Weinberger.
When Sue Carpenter first played a mountain dulcimer in 1981, she was immediately captivated by its simplicity and challenged by its fingerpicking possibilities. Her innovative fingerpicking style has won her many awards including 2005 National Mountain Dulcimer Champion at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS. As an instrumentalist, Sue is best known for her expressive style and exceptional technical ability. As a teacher, she is well known for her challenging, highly organized and intensive methods, nurturing patience, and energetic enthusiasm, which make learning fun.
A New Jersey native living in Denver, Colorado, Lucille is a graduate of Westminster Choir College and a Melodious Accord Composers Fellow, whose awards include National Hammered Dulcimer Champion (1997), Mountain Laurel Autoharp Champion (1995, 2010) and International Autoharp Champion (1995, 2003, 2010).
Passion for folk, old timey, bluegrass music and the love of the mountain and hammered dulcimers, led Dick to develop a unique and exciting approach to playing the dulcimers. He started out by learning to play in the oral tradition (by ear), then gradually learning music theory (paper training) has given Dick a masterful insight to teaching the mountain and hammered dulcimers. His philosophy to music and the dulcimer, reverberates the belief that music comes from a person's soul and lives in the singing and playing that each person expresses. The key word is enjoy.
Additional instructors will be Pat & Claudia Hogan and local skilled teachers/players - Laura Greensmith, Tom Mahoney, Todd Olson, Wendy Grethen, and the local Sacred Harp Shape Note Singing club.
Lunch will be available during the day. Dinner will be catered by Duluth Grill and will be a taco bar with many fresh ingredients.
Instrument and craft vendors will be set up from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The performers will also have their CDs and books for sale.
Concerts will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Please register in advance for workshops. If you are so inclined, bring some treats/snacks to share as an afternoon snack and for the evening dessert.

$ 8 per person (No pre-registration)9:30 to 10:30 Beginning Germanic Genealogy
Based on the book Beginner’s Guide to Germanic Genealogy, this session focuses on the goal of finding the German birth record of the immigrant ancestor. We begin with “best case scenario” of finding a place name and locating it in Germany and finding microfilmed records. Then we visit various “worse” cases that researchers often encounter, such as the place is outside of Germany or the place name is misspelled. Finally we consider the “worst case” of not knowing a town name, suggesting strategies and resources.10:30 to 11:00 Break
11:00 to 12 noon Surprising and Amusing Discoveries in German Research
Typical, amusing mistakes and surprising, unusual discoveries lead us to explore essential concepts, such as place names, residence versus birth place, migration within Europe, and kernels of truth within family stories. Along the way, we will encounter history and geography of several German regions, as well as research strategies.
