Veterans’ Memorial Hall Needs $35,000 to Complete Northland Veterans Exhibit
Veterans’ Memorial Hall, a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society, will be hosting a press conference on August 14th at 10:00 am at the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center (Depot) to inform the public and the media of an upcoming fundraising drive for our next exhibit, Generations of Service. At the event, we will explain what will be in the next exhibit and why we need to raise $35,000 to complete it.
What is Generations of Service?
Currently in northeast Minnesota, there are over 27,000 veterans, and right now many of our local men and women are serving overseas all over the world. At this time, there is no place where the public can go to know what these individuals have done for this country and this region. There are many stone memorials all over the northland, but these memorials usually only mention the names of the men and women who died and do not tell the story of what they did.
This is why, the St. Louis County Historical Society, the premier historical organization in northeast Minnesota, is planning on constructing a new veterans exhibit, Generations of Service, that will encompass all eras, from the Civil War to the current Global War on Terror. This exhibit will include artifacts and stories from our local veterans from all conflicts. Examples are an 1818 twenty star US flag, a ballot for Abraham Lincoln, a piece of hard tack from the Spanish American War, a WWI German machine gun taken off of an airplane, a bomber jacket from WWII, an imperial Japanese flag with names of the Japanese war criminals convicted at the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, “Bunny Boots” from the Korean War, a ditty bag with Snoopy hand sewn on it from Vietnam, a Coca-Cola can purchased in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield/Storm, and a full uniform from a recently returned service member of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Veterans’ Memorial Hall strives to collect and preserve veterans’ stories and artifacts and to educate the public on veterans’ history in northeast Minnesota. It does this through exhibits and a website, which currently has over 6,000 veterans’ stories.
